As the frontman for the Orange County hardcore punk band MIA, Michael Conley raged against war, racism and the isolation of modern life on stage alongside other legendary acts in the 1980s like the Dead Kennedys and Social Distortion.

“Life’s a mess, you gotta face it, if you’re not a millionaire it’s hard to make it, I’m a mess, that’s for sure,” Conley sang in one song.

More recently, Conley became a champion for revitalizing the economy in Westside Costa Mesa as the owner of The Avalon Bar, 820 19th St., a popular venue for Orange County DJs.

“We used to kid he was the mayor of Costa Mesa because everyone knew him,” said Jeff “Meatball” Tulinius, a longtime friend of Conley’s. “He was a popular guy — everyone knew Mike Conley.”

Conley, a father of three, died in suburban Chicago Thursday after he was found suffering a major head wound in a motel parking lot near O’Hare International Airport. Cook County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating. Investigators are waiting for the results of toxicology tests after an autopsy was done. He was 48 years old.

A longtime local resident, Conley was known for his efforts to bring music and art to Westside Costa Mesa.

“He was a pioneer,” said Brett Walker, owner of eVocal, a boutique and art space near The Avalon Bar.

Conley was Walker’s landlord and helped him get eVocal off the ground, he said.

“He was one of the few people on the Westside to bring in businesses and help make change in this area,” Walker said. “He was an artist himself who understood the importance of arts and culture.”

As a bar owner, Conley strove to make The Avalon Bar a hip enclave for people in the know. With no sign to attract customers, the establishment relied on word-of-mouth advertising. Conley was skilled at working with wood and restored all the wood cabinetry in the bar himself, Tulinius said.

“It was like something you would find in New York — very dark-low-lighting-cozy atmosphere,” Walker said. “Once people made The Avalon their home, that’s where they would go. He really wanted it to be a special place for people who understood what he was doing.”

Former MIA guitar player Nick Adams said Conley had a knack for drawing people to him.

“Mike was really a very charismatic guy,” Adams said. “He had an energy about him that I think attracted people.”

The band formed out of the ashes of the Las Vegas punk band the Swell after members Adams and Conley both moved to California, according to their official biography from Alternative Tentacles, the band’s record label. MIA played parties and at the seminal Costa Mesa punk venue the Cuckoo’s Nest in the early 1980s.

After breaking up and eventually reforming and short tours through the Southwest, MIA landed a record deal with Alternative Tentacles and toured America and Canada in 1984.

The band broke up in 1985, but reformed again in 1986. Alternative Tentacles released a compilation of the band’s studio and live recordings over the years in 2001 titled “Lost Boys.”

Conley made friends everywhere he went, Adams said. Wherever the show, Conley would be surrounded by a crowd.

Conley’s new friends would often end up tagging along with the band for a few stops on tour — which generally consisted of four punk rockers rolling across the United States in a van full of equipment.

Barking out the lyrics to songs like “I Hate Hippies” over buzz-saw guitar parts, Conley was a charismatic frontman, Adams said.

“He was very energetic on stage, he had a lot of drive. He had a vision for the band that was very creative,” Adams said. “It was a time when there was kind of a rebellion against the regular music industry so it was exciting to make your own records and put together your own tours.”

Former Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra remembers the first time he saw MIA, in Las Vegas in 1983.

“The venue was two used storage spaces that some punks had knocked the middle wall out of and turned into a secret illegal nightclub,” Biafra said. “You can’t get more punk rock than that that, and that is where I first saw MIA.”

Biafra offered to sign Conley and MIA to his Alternative Tentacles label that night. Biafra said Conley’s distinctive voice was one of the factors that made the band stick out.

“The minute you hear a song with him singing you know it’s him. It’s the best possible thing a singer can have — even if he has a range of one note, but Mike had a range of many more than one note,” Biafra said.

Mike Watt, bass player of fellow ’80s punk group the Minutemen, also spoke of Conley’s distinct vocals.

“I could tell it was them right away because of his singing,” Watt said via e-mail. “Very distinctive.”

Biafra said MIA mastered the Southern California hardcore sound of the early ’80s. He said the conservatism of Orange County influenced many of the area punk bands like MIA, TSOL and DI.

“That is partly what made the hardcore that came out of Orange County so hardcore — they were so repressed.”

The news of Conley’s death saddened Biafra, who noted he is among many in the hardcore community who died too young.

Conley is survived by longtime girlfriend Shelly “Syd” Leonard and his three daughters: Alex, 18, a freshman and Division 1 soccer player at La Salle University; Zoe, 9, and Ava, 5.

First of all I just want to say thank you for all the love and support shown by Mike's many friends over the last two days. The outpouring has truly been amazing, and having been with his family virtually non-stop since getting the news, I can tell you all that Sid and the girls, along with all of us who were close to Mike very much appreciate everything.

We know now that Mike was not murdered, but died as a result of a tragic and freak accident. This is the official word given to the immediate family by the authorities. It doesn't change anything, but we are all somewhat heartened to know that the early rumors, which led us all to imagine the worst, were not accurate and that hopefully he did not suffer.

It has been a crazy last two days and we have been doing so much. The memorial fund has been set up for Mike's daughters and we are getting the link set up for PayPal so people can donate that way if they wish. For the moment, if you want to help, here is the info:

We are also working on a website for information and links to various things - the foremost of which will be a future benefit show with proceeds going to the memorial fund for Mike's daughters. This is of course in the early stages, but many bands are already expressing a desire to participate, and some are already collecting donations at their shows this weekend. Thanks to Midlife Chrysler, Love Canal, The Briefs and others already starting to do that on their own. What we are talking about is something big, down the road a few months from now that will be well-planned and as big as we can make it. The website will be a place to obtain news and info as it is developed, as well as a way for bands and individuals who may want to help or participate to contact us and leave their info. Stay tuned here for more info.

It is late and I have not slept in two days so I must go to bed now, but wanted to get some info out there as I was on the phone all day with everybody and still could not begin to say I have reached everyone I need to or that Mike would have wanted. I will continue to update here and the website when we get it up.

One last thought for now - as with anything like this, there will be a lot of rumors and theories going around, there is already a lot of stuff out there in cyberspace and the print media, some accurate, some not. It doesn't matter - I can tell you until I'm blue in the face as I have been in direct contact with Mike's immediate family who are the only people the authorities are releasing any information to - what matters is that Mike was one of the best friends anyone could ever have, an incredible human being, wonderful father and partner who loved Shelly and his three daughters more than anything, a true legend and a man with a heart of gold who affected anybody who knew him. We are grateful to know his last moments were not, as first feared, being victim of a horrible crime and suffering or scared, or worse. They got it right folks. Even though I go back almost 30 years with Mike and for all the years we lived together and all we went through, it should not surprise me but I am and continue to be simply amazed at the magnitude of the response and how many people Mike touched and affected, the phone calls and nice things everyone is saying and doing. For my part it's been just about the toughest and hardest thing I could ever imagine, an emotionally draining last two days but it is a labor of love, Mike meant so much to me, as with all of us and it's a labor of love for sure, I know he would have done the same for my family.

Kevin DuBrow of Quiet Riot found dead

One of my favorite shows, ever, was the time I saw Quiet Riot (2002 or 2003) at a tiny bar in Concord, California with 200 or so other people. It was a blast. They wore spandex. And did all their hits.

There's no cause of death (apparently the guy was sober and straight).

Anyway, I don't have any Quiet Riot music, but I did find 3 versions of Cum On Feel The Noise by THE CRACK, ONE WAY SYSTEM and The Humppa King ELIKALAISET

R.I.P. Mikey Offender

He will be missed...

Mikey "Offender" Donaldson passed away in his sleep on September 22 in Barcelona Spain where he had recently relocated from Amsterdam. The cause is unknown at the moment. He was 46. He is survived by his brother Joe Donaldson, sister Marie Donaldson Ward, and sister Sumiko Hakari, all of Killeen, Texas.

Mikey was the bass player for Austin punk band the Offenders from 1978-86. He also recorded bass tracks on MDC's groundbreaker "Millions of Dead Cops" and DRI's "Dealing With It." Mikey also performed regularly with MDC in the early 1980s. He moved to San Francisco in 1986 and went on to play and record with Gary Floyd (Dicks) and Lynn Perko (Imperial Teen) in Sister Double Happiness. After leaving the music scene for ten years or so, Mikey returned to Austin and reunited with the original Offenders line-up for a gig at Emo's in March 2002. In 2003 MDC recruited Mikey and their original line-up, recorded a new album, and have been touring all over the world ever since.

Mikey is universally regarded as one of the most innovative and inimitable masters of the bass guitar. He played his Rickenbacker like it was a out-sized rhythm guitar. Taking cues from Jack Bruce and Lemmy, Mikey pioneered an aggressive speed-picking style and liberal employment of bass chords that few have been able to emulate in the past 20 years. He will be sorely missed, certainly in Austin and his hometown of Killeen, but also across the globe. A memorial celebration in Austin is pending and the date will be announced soon.

Whatever happened to Moskwa? I asked myself this the other day when I was listening to their S/T LP (recorded in 1987, released in 1989).

A quick google search pointed me to their Myspace Page. I guess the band is based (part time?) in Germany. And they toured in '06 with Armia. And they re-released all their old recordings on CD, including a live show from 1984! Fuck.

I just flew back from New York and boy are my arms tired. I flew Jet Blue. My flight was the only one, it seemed like, that wasn't delayed and arrived in New York on time. Hooray for me. This was after, of course, they cancelled my first flight from Oakland and I had to reschedule.

When in New York, always go to Katz's Deli on the Lower East Side. Then go drink at many many many Lower East Side bars... Especially Doc Holiday's, KGB Bar, Mars Bar, Manitoba's and Otto's Shrunken Head.

So, that trip, and things getting busier at work, is why I haven't been updating this website very frequently. So to make up for it, here's the Xpozez - Democrazy 7" (that I released), that's out of print, in it's entirety. The songs are taken from BCT#18 tape.

So I went to Gilman's 20th anniversary a few weeks ago and had a blast. I put up some pictures here

Black Fork, Schlong, and El Dopa all reunited for this show. I already covered Black Fork and El Dopa here, so today you get Schlong.

Formed in 1989 by Pat and Dave Mello and Gavin Mcarthur, and named after Gavin's cat, they've released a tonn of records, mostly on Very Small and Bun Length. There are two CDs you should get - the Essential Schlong and the Unessential Schlong. That's pretty much the entire discography (aside from West Side Story on Hopeless Records).

Once an east bay powerhouse (former members of Grimple and Econochrist and future members of Watch Them Die, Kalas, One In The Chamber and I Love A Parade), El Dopa broke up in 1998, but have reunited for a limited number of shows in the Bay Area around New Year's: December 30th at Gilman and January 6th at Annie's in San Francisco.

All this, of course, coincides with the Discography CD release on Tee Pee Records. Pick up a copy.

They're brown, they're down and they're coming to your town. Manic Hispanic (former and current members of The Adolescents, Cadillac Tramps, The Grabbers, 22 Jacks, Final Conflict, and Agent Orange) has been one of my favorite bands since I first picked up The Reclince Of Mexican Civilization years ago.

Four full lengths (all of which have been re-released on BYO) and an out of print 7" later, they're still going strong and manage to put on some of the best shows in punk rock.

One of my favorite bands from the 90s Bay Area scene (along with Black Fork, Ojo Rojo and some others) was Sake who did a killer 10" (sometimes referred to as the "Pinata" 10") on Zafio (which you can still buy, and it comes with a giant vinyl sticker).

and a 7" on Hopscotch Records who are now defunct, but try Ebullition - they may still carry it.

I dont remember seeing any of the people in this band in any other bands, except for the bass player who played a few shows with another band called The Godz (who were very short lived, from what I remember). Doing an online search the name - The Hitch came up. Never heard them, unfortunately. Any help on whether any of them played in other bands would be greately appreciated.

Thanks to AFI's rise to superstardom, this Zafio Records' release is the most thought after.

Black Fork's band history has been detailed in a previous post.

Dead And Gone had three LPs (on GSL, Prank and Alternative Tentacles), two 7"s (on Prank and GSL), one split 7" with Gaia (on Prank?). The band broke up and got back together twice, I think? They're currently broken up. Again.

Screw 32, from Concord, had two LPs (on Wingnut and FAT) and a split 7" with Fury 66. They broke up back in '98.

Zafio Records was a brainchild of Jesse Luscious (who has his own tribute page) and Kamala. I dont know the entire discography, in order, I just know that I own most of their releases, so when Jesse asked me to post MP3s of his releases, on my website, it made perfect sense.

The Gr'Ups were formed in 1990 or 1991 with former mebmers of Blatz, Operation Ivy and future members of Cypher In The Snow, Criminals, Rancid and Naked Aggression. The band toured in the US and Europe (with Citizen Fish). Sadly, the band lasted for a two or three years, releasing only two 7"s: Self Titled (click the link to buy it from Jesse) and Building Are The Purtiest Trees I've Seen.

Here are some pictures from a show at the Autonomes Zentrum in Heidelberg, Germany ("borrowed" from StuckOnEarth.com).

Both 7"s are out of print, but Recess Records is in the process of reissuing those tracks with some bonuses on CD in the near future.

There's also rumors of reunion shows...

While both those bands are fun in their own right, I'm very excited and somewhat apprehensive, about the return of Decry. Apprehensive because I've seen so many great bands have shitty reunions. Excited because it's fucking Decry, one of my favorite So Cal bands from the 80s. But, by all accounts, Decry rip it up on stage.

Love em or hate em, Fuck Ups were an integral part of the Bay Area hardcore scene in the early 80s along with Sick Pleasure, Bad Posture, Lewd, Fang etc. etc. etc. The 7" has been bootlegged repeatedly on CD, but has never been repressed on vinyl, to my knowledge. Last I was told, Bob Noxious lives in Santa Cruz (or thereabouts) and has two kids.

Probably my favorite band to come out of San Francisco. Sick Pleasure was only around for two years and never released anything while the band was still around (although material was recorded). A split LP with Code Of Honor (who were Sick Pleasure minus Nicki Sicki) and a 7" came out after Nicki moved back to Texas (and subsequently started Verbal Abuse).

Nicki Sicki - vocals - was also in Humungous and the first incarnation of Verbal Abuse - the one that released American Band (both bands have CDs out on Beer City Records).
Mike Fox - guitar - started Code Of Honor after Sick Pleasure broke up. Not sure what other bands he's been in. Everything COH recorded has been re-relased on CD by Subterranean Records. Mike also helped start Subterranean records back in 1979, was it?
Dave Chavez - bass - was in X-Iles before Sick Pleasure then in Code Of Honor, Verbal Abuse, Ding Dang and a whole slew of Bay Area bands.
Sal Paradise - drums - was in Code Of Honor after Sick Pleasure and was later deported to England. Or so Nicki tells me.

There's also talk of re-releasing all Sick Pleasure material on vinyl.

One of my favorite east bay hardcore bands (and one of the more underrated ones - probably due to the fact that most of their stuff remains unreleased and out of print) is Special Forces. During their lifetime the band released two LPs and two 7"s (as well as several songs on several comps).

Orlando (vocals) sang with United Blood and Intrepid AAF after Special Forces. Bill Collins did time in Fang, MDC, Baltimore Footstompers and I'm sure some other bands I'm forgetting. He's playing in The Swaggerts now, as well as doing solo stuff. More on Bill here: myspace.com/billcollinsguitar.

Indonesian punk scene is a lot like the 1982 US Punk scene. Every big city has a tonn of bands. All shows had at least 6 bands (one had 21). Everyone's awesome and friendly. Cant wait to come back.

Look for my writeup in, hopefully, MRR, in a few months...

One band that we spent a lot of time with was Suicidal Sinatra (brilliant name) - a psychobilly band from just outside of Kuta, Bali with the best stand up bass player I've ever seen. Ever. They dont have a website, yet, but you can get more info at ELECTROHELL.

Coming out of Fresno (home of Capitol Punishment), I'm not sure how long this band has been together (maybe two years?) but if you like Doom and/or Discharge, you'll dig this, for sure. The tracks below were taken from their second demo (the first demo, at least the CD-R that I have skips horribly). They recently released a CD with the demo songs re-recorded (I dont have it in front of me, and I cant remember which label did it, or if they did it themselves).

Several lineup changes (they have a new drummer and are now a 4 piece) later, the band matured and playes killer discore.

Originally they were called Tiny Elvis. What a great name. They came over to the West Coast of the US twice for two very unsuccesfull tours (lack of promotion, mainly). In the UK, however, they made enough noise and got themselves signed to Golf Records (home of Snuff, Less Than Jake and the euro re-releases of Poison Idea, 7 Seconds and Youth Brigade). After releasing one full length - We're Not All Civilians (click the link to buy it), the band broke up, only to reform with a different guitar player (who they've replaced twice since then, I beleive) as 7 Crowns.

I met the band, apparently, on their second US "tour" when they played with Jewdriver in Oakland. I really met the band when they came out for BOBFest 2007 in Oakland and stayed with us. What a fun group of guys.

They're tourin in Indoneisa in April (yep. Indoneisa. and yep. I'm going!).

Jason Sears (RKL) passed away recently as did Tom "Pig Champion" Roberts (Poison Idea). Both bands were a huge influence (literally, in Poison Idea's case) on a tonn of kids. I only got to see Poison Idea once. Killer show. There was a second show they were supposed to play in SF, but they never showed up. I heard a lot of " the axels on their van must have given out" jokes that night. I've seen RKL lots of time, most recently on their tour with one of the incarnations of the English Dogs. Such a fun band.

MP3: CODE OF HONOR - 1982 - 1984 CD

Subterranean Records put out a CODE OF HONOR discography. The CD has the band's 7" (+ one unreleased track from that recording session), their side of the split LP with SICK PLEASURE (both of which are excellent) and the BEWARE THE SAVAGE JAW LP (not so great). COH were from San Francisco. It's the same lineup as SICK PLEASURE with Jonithin Christ of SOCIETY DOG on vocals instead of NICKI SICKI (who left for Texas and started Verbal Abuse, at the time).

You can get the CD for $11 from Subterranean Records. I dont have a cover scan, unfortunately, because I'm lazy.
